Rich in ranching heritage, the Silver Spur Ranches have operations in Wyoming, New Mexico, Colorado and Nebraska. Today, the ranch is ranked as the ninth largest commercial cattle operation in the U.S. and is home to progressive ranching and outfitting services.. While our ranches date as far back as the 1800’s and having raised one of the first Quarter Horses on record, we are an operation which also embraces current technology, research and genetics. With each tradition of the past, we embrace the opportunity to create new traditions and efficiencies that will ensure these ranches continue for generations to come.
In 1879 Albert H. Huston homesteaded what is now known as the Silver Spur Ranch located near Encampment, Wyoming in the North Platte Valley, surrounded by the Snowy Range and Sierra Madre Mountain Ranges.
There are five Silver Spur Ranch divisions in Walden, Colorado, which include: Lone Pine, Canadian, Big Horn, Three Rivers, and Diamond J. These ranches run over 3,500 head of commercial cattle and comprised of over 70,000 acres. Elevation’s in this area reach over 10,000 feet and is where many of our replacement heifers are raised.
In 1999 the Silver Spur purchased one of New Mexico’s most historic ranches, the TO. In it’s early history, the TO was home to one of the country’s most famous Hereford herds. Today the ranch runs approximately 2,400 head of commercial cattle. Large mesas and expanses of flat grassland couple together for a scenic and productive operation encompassing over 220,000 acres.
The iconic Bell Ranch was purchased in 2010, which added 290,000 additional acres. The Bell Ranch came into existence as a Mexican Land Grant to Pablo Montoya in 1824. At the time it was almost 646,000 acres of vast, colorful and productive grassland located in the desirable northeastern quadrant of New Mexico. The Bell Ranch Headquarters is listed on the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties and National Register of Historic Places. The Bell is home to The Silver Spur horse breeding program and boasts the largest Remuda of all the ranches as well as over 3,800 head of cattle.
The Kiowa Creek division of Silver Spur Ranches is spread through the Elbert, El Paso and Douglas counties in central Colorado covering over 80,000 acres. This division is a seedstock provider of Angus, Red Angus and Charolais genetics. In addition, Kiowa is home base for our show cattle, registered and Rangefire composite herds. The Rangefire is a Charolais and Red Angus cross originally developed by the Silver Spur Ranches Encampment division. We have found this cross to have appeal as replacement females, commercial bulls and as feeder cattle. The Silver Spur Rangefire Program is dedicated to establishing multiple generation cattle with known and proven performance data. Kiowa Creek runs over 1000 head of Angus and Red Angus cattle.
The newest addition to the Silver Spur Ranches family is a 20,000 head capacity feedlot located in Minatare, Nebraska. Silver Spur Feeders covers over 5,000 acres of pivots and irrigated land, focusing on custom feeding all natural non hormone treated cattle. The Nebraska division also has a small yearling herd.
